Interview with Author Alan Rolnick out of its important work
Landmark status is a wonderfully funny book. Alan Rolnick uses Miami as background, and real estate as the weapon, taking the reader on a crazy trip that I can guarantee you will enjoy. When I left the book and wrote this review, I knew I wanted to talk to this guy. Anyone can create strange characters and incredibly funny scenes that I knew Landmark State must be a very interesting to discuss. Alan had given an interview.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I grew up in Newburgh, New York, a small town on the Hudson River. It was a beautiful, old, proud and above all he knew was obsolete and separate history moorings and adrift in the new era. As a child playing in an abandoned brewery, the bus trips to Yankee Stadium and collected autographs from Hector Lopez and Moose Skowron (never close enough to Mickey and Yogi). Once, a big boy sitting in my hand for the entire journey by bus, leaving welts striped velvet, which lasted one week, but was not really his fault I could not throw strikes.
In my teens, Beatlemania beaten. My brother Paul and I decided to be rock stars, the savings for guitars with the money laundering case, the battles of the bands that played in the fire of picnic circuit. Paul was an exceptional guitarist and vocalist, destined to become a producer awarded in New York. It was not, but returned after he graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a major in Frisbee. Together, we have made some brilliant recordings heard, Opening won fifty dollars Buffy St. Marie at the Philharmonic, and coincidentally the home team instead of going for the concert next weekend at the Mercer Arts Center (which collapsed later that night).
Taking journalism to me throughout my career, I became the man in the New York Times who used computers to order the college and professional football teams. In 1983, rights to pollsters the Miami Hurricanes national championship, but my favorite team Auburn. I was in Miami, fell for the place, and decided it was time to go to law school (as requested by my family since I was six years, usually with comments like "talks a lot, be a lawyer.") The idea of living in a gentle breeze caresses you through the door of December was particularly attractive.
Atoning for the error of my computer, I have learned in the classes of crimes and locked out all the sleepless nights in the review of legislation, earning induction Society wig and gown (which, fortunately, neither the port required.) After twenty years of schooling, they put me on the day shift at work one of the best legal sweatshops Miami, which represents "robber barons" in complex cases in federal courts. Years later, switched sides and began representing David against Goliath in class actions.
Finally, he decided it was time to throw a rope around places I've met people and I was, and began to write the kind of story I liked to read.
What the lawyers, who are all closet authors? In the last year, I've read at least a dozen books by people in the profession, oh and they have all been very good. I concluded that any lawyer must have a book for them.
By God, there is a lot? Seriously, however, lawyers have to write to eat, and they have been trained to turn their fact models "in stories. Many of these stories are stranger than fiction, and are aspiring to reach your account. Storytelling is crucial in litigation, where victory requires the development of weight issues, maintaining the character of witnesses, and distilling all the legal arguments in paragraph pithiest possible. A companion class used to say that he imagined hearing the words: "Yes, you f___," after every sentence written argument. The experience of unification of all law students is fatigue, so I'm not surprised that he has forgotten that he said.
When the idea of Landmark State come from?
Miami is a border city, where foreigners easily become insiders, swollen at the bar, tipping back a mojito and learning quickly that there is no secret handshake. I'd never been there, and my legal training had placed in his inner sanctum. There, I worked with movers and shakers and tangled colorful kaleidoscope that were occupied by the company in Miami, buying and selling of land the same way, again and again. Also involved in the case of Ponzi schemes most infamous Miami. He became a fan of Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry, I wanted to do my part to honor this unique, subtropical crazy. He has to involve a mad scramble for a piece of property, fund of investment fraud. And he was a lawyer at the center, making actual practice of law, citing real cases.
How long did you put this project?
Five years. It just seems more long.
I was very impressed by the Landmark State I like black humor. Are you satisfied with how it turned out?
First all, thanks for the kind words. It's always hard to know if the computer works! And yes, I am very happy with the way the book turned out. Black humor seems to be growing wild here, a bright and beautiful place so impressive, even when the disaster is ready to strike at random, and random. Miami is a city built by people in general, cold, dead ends persecution or personal, for to do (and) this magical city tends to favor one type of insulation themselves. It is a feeling Narcissistic security and success you can feel simply by turning the face to the sun, until the impact of a sudden the reality of breaking your reverie. This often occurs rather State reference, starting with the wrecking ball in the first scene.
As the characters around town Miami, where most are in fact the dominant political and ethnic conflict with the most serious problems the American creed and what happened at this time in our mood. history of immigrants from around the world said, but Delia, and to a lesser extent, Benjy and Raj, are the only ones who think about what it means. I have not found the time to explore the history of Miami's origins, how it got to be, who built it, and came here when or why. But as it developed, the story became a bit more like "Hawaii" and a little less as "Hawaii Five-O" (screeching car chase through tires, despite Opa-Locka). In retrospect, I think giving the historical perspective is a rich history. This also means you do not do it again.
Most authors style their characters real people, then how Benjy Alan?
Benjy much sweeter than I, for one thing. I think we share the feeling almost silent inside the good and evil that drives him, but mocks him. I'm proud of him, because swimming upstream is not easy. It also tends to reject the trial of a lot longer than I, more fortunate suffer fools me. He hates to lose, however, and do what it takes to win, and we are very similar in this regard. I like his easy tolerance connivers antics around him. I did idea where he got that. And this trust fund thing? Fully integrated. All donations will be gratefully accepted.
Let Benjy see new adventures in your next book?
Benjy will definitely be back. Once you figure how to do this in any publication track network about his whereabouts will be provided on my site (Alan Rolnick).
I realized in my view would be that Landmark State transition into the big screen What are your thoughts?
It is great to hear what you think. From the beginning, Landmark State planning to make a film to break (excuse of the Spanish Inquisition sketch). I can see photos when I set a scene, and I make them in pixels as well as words. Of course, to destroy all these cars cost money, so do not make this cheap. Somewhere on my desk, there is a book dedicated to quality options and rates of music. If what was done few years, I would hunt Benjy Dustin Hoffman to play, but I hope you are interested in playing Benjy's father Bernard, a lawyer negotiating zoning legendary.
I understand that you are currently working on a film project, can you tell us a bit about it?
I'm executive producer of the film "Canvas" which is on the screen and will be in the next year in the early DVD. Produced by Sharon Lane (a force of nature whom I have the privilege of being married), stars Joe Pantoliano, Marcia Gay Harden and Devon Gearhart. The film won several festival awards and praise for its realistic portrayal of families struggling with mental illness. Sharon fought for years to overcome apathy by the independent film studio and the first time director Joe Greco. We finally raised the money and shot ourselves in the South Florida during the 2005 hurricane season, legendary, almost all of us started Wednesday to Sharon has another drama in development, which is also playing its experience in managing and working with young actors. I'm on board business and legal affairs, and could produce an exec, too. I'm fishing for a play later.
Obviously, you are a multifaceted, lawyer, movie maker, and now author. What to do with all your "free" time?
Honestly, I have little free time. I'm usually fighting for a place to keep our child with excess reserves, Max, who is busy with school, piano lessons, soccer and baseball.
Alan, I want to thank you for taking the time to talk with me, and congratulations once again creating a wonderful book, I hope to see in the list of best-seller New York Times in the very near future.
Thank you very much, Simon. It was a pleasure.
